The Architecture of Mortality is a collection that reflects the fragility of life, a reminder of the cycles of death and rebirth that echo throughout history, but more deeply, it honors the innocent lives lost to war, oppression, and suffering. Inspired by the stark, evocative imagery of voodoo, these monochrome and muted-color pieces draw on spiritual symbols and cultural memory, leaving a lasting impression that transcends mere artwork. The skulls, staring back from the canvas with haunting clarity, serve as a poignant reminder of the ultimate equalizer—mortality itself. The use of subdued tones serves as a contrast to the deeply arresting subject matter, echoing the somber reality of lives lost yet simultaneously embodying the quiet power of remembrance and reverence.

This collection is particularly meaningful this All Hallows’ Eve—a time traditionally dedicated to remembering the dead, mourning loss, and reflecting on life. It feels most fitting to dedicate these works to the innocent lives that have been unjustly taken over the last year in places like Palestine, Sudan, and Congo, where people have been subjected to the cruelty of war, oppression, and systemic violence. Behind every conflict there are stories of humanity lost, dreams shattered, and potential unfulfilled. “The Architecture of Mortality” seeks to honor those souls, giving a voice to the voiceless and asking us all to stop, reflect, and acknowledge their untimely absence.

As you look into these works, I invite you to see more than just the imagery—they carry with them the weight of untold stories, and yet, beneath the surface, they ask a question about what could be. What might the world look like without conflict? How might we live if we truly embraced peace, compassion, and understanding, if we saw each other not as enemies but as equals in this shared experience of mortality?

This art is a meditation on life’s fragility, but it is also a call for hope. Despite the devastation that we witness, there remains a quiet possibility for a future free of war, where peace is not just an ideal but a lived reality. This collection stands as a bridge between sorrow and possibility, between the architecture of death and the dream of a future where we no longer build monuments to war but to peace.

The Story Behind the Art

Creating this collection was not simply an artistic endeavor but amazing process. The imagery was inspired by the iconography of voodoo, which in itself is a symbol of life, death, and the cyclical nature of existence. The skulls serve as a universal symbol, seen across cultures, but here they take on a specific resonance, connected to the struggles of real people. This collection is for those who have been forgotten, those who have been wronged by the hand of war and oppression, and for all of us who must remember to honor them.

In their simplicity, these pieces tell a complex story of both sorrow and hope, and it is my sincerest hope that they provoke reflection on how we can move forward—toward a world where we no longer need to remember the lost in the wake of conflict but can instead celebrate the living in the light of peace.

As someone who has always been highly creative with a strong visual eye for curation and composition, I’ve found my perfect medium in digital art. Working in a digital format allows me to bring together my passion for design with the flexibility and innovation of modern technology. It gives me the unique opportunity to combine my skills in a way that transforms concepts into tangible art, pieces that I can share with the world. Through digital art, I’m not only able to create visually striking works, but also share my thoughts and ideas, engaging with a wider audience in a meaningful way. This medium has become a powerful tool for me to express creativity, spark conversations, and connect on both an artistic and intellectual level.

My Connection with Voodoo

I’ve held a long-time interest in the practice of voodoo and its fascinating evolution, an interest that began during my research for a book called Ancient Ways to Live a Modern Life. In that project, I delved deeply into original religions and spiritual practices, seeking to understand how these ancient belief systems still resonate with the modern world. Voodoo, with its rich symbolism and deep connection to the cycles of life and death, particularly stood out to me.

As Halloween approached this year, I kept seeing imagery from La Dia de los Muertos, with its beautiful, celebratory approach to honoring the dead. This naturally led me back to voodoo, which shares many similar themes but has its own unique rituals and history. The more I reflected on it, the more I felt inspired to incorporate voodoo as a central theme for this Halloween, culminating in the creation of The Architecture of Mortality collection. These works reflect both my long-standing fascination with voodoo and the meaningful connections between life, death, and the unseen forces that shape our existence.
